                                  The "Band"

The whole thing started out wrong. We meaning Neil Acton, Barry Hayes, Steve Malnick and myself had tickets for the early show(9:30). Wanting to be early and beat the crowd we arrived at 6:45 at Massey Hall in Toronto. After all that rush we found out that it was the old " everyone beat everyone's there" thing. About 2000 other kids were already there. We waited in the snow and cold ( and I mean scarf n' glove cold) just long enough to be crushed numb. Finally the doors were opened and we were in. It wasn't for another 1/2 hour till we found our seats.

First appearin was a folk singer called Jessee Winchester who was there to warm up the crowd before the big event. Although everyone clapped I still say that he was only a guitar tuner by profession who played a few songs on the side.

Then it happened! The Band came on stage. Applause. Silence. Without a word they rolled into "Wheels of Fire". From then on it was up hill all the way. Words cannot describe them. It is a feeling you get from the band not a sound. They don't say a word to the audience...they don't sing about drugs, sex or revolution, not one single hip in the group gyrates. What they do is simply play beautiful music with beautiful words. They don't entertain the audience, they capture them.

After " Cripple Creek" their last song, the audience literally erupted. Again without a word they came back on stage and did another song. The song was beautiful. The Band was beautiful and all I could say when Neil asked "What did you think of them?" was simply " It was beautiful". I mean it....Gary Ockenden..submitted 1969

Larry Sales....tellin tales!
My Dad got posted to Borden in Oct 64, however there were no PMQs available
on the base until the following summer.   I attended Barrie North (I hated
it) until June. In July 65 we moved to Borden, 335 Saskatchewan Blvd.
I attended Camp Borden District High School from Sep 65 to Jun 66.  Form
10D.
I started at CBDHS again in the Fall (11B), however the military underwent a
reorganization and many units were moved to Petawawa.   I didnt want to
leave Borden.
I went to GPHS from 66-69.

I hung out with Karl Diebert, Ron Glatley, Norm Breault, Brian Allan, Rick
Gould, Jim Cousineau,
Dwight Sawers and Rick Mandy.

We had keys to the Scout Hall (an H Hut across the road from the MLS/Canex)
and were in there at all wierd hours.  Brian Allan and the band used to
practice in there also.  It is a wonder the meatheads never noticed.  There
were two Base Commanders houses close to the Air Force canteen.  After
integration only one house was being used.  Col Elliott was the Base
Commander in 1966 and sons, Muck and Tim would get the keys and we would
have a party in the other house when his parents were out.  The meatheads
never went down in there.   These two houses were pulled down recently.

In 1976 - 1977 I was at CFSAL on the Basic Logistics Officers Course.   The
course ran from Sep 76 to Mar 77.  (I ended up in Gagetown afterward).  When
I first got there I went over to the high school with the intention of
finding out when the football games were scheduled and wanted to watch a
few.  In the foyer were photos of all of the honour students from years
past.  On was a photo of Ron Glatley (he was also in Brian Allan's band).  I
was there in my work dress looking at the photos and recognizing people.   A
couple of students came by and were chuckling.  I guess that was the route
that a lot of us PMQ brats took was to join up later.   There was no half
way, You either liked the military or you hated it.   In 2003 I was back in
Borden and went into the school.
All of the photos were gone.   I checked at the office and found that the
school had closed in the 1990's.  There were tears.

In the 1960's Cadets was compulsory for all boys.  Every boy in Grade
9/10/11 was automatically in Cadets and had to parade.  We would break off
early on Cadet days and have to learn drill.  The girls got to go home.  I
dont know when this Cadet system ended but in 1966 we were out there in old
battledress, boots, gaiters, and red berets. You could get out of being in Cadets if you brought a note from your parents that they didnt want you in the Cadets.   Fat Chance on a military base. The rumours were that Cadet units received money from the military for support and that the school used it to buy sports equipment, etc.  So it all went to a worthy cause. The local county is taxing the base heavily which is why many buildings are being torn down.  Some of them are of architechural significance.

Mr. Shute's Grade 10 Math Class

Below is a story, I think on the lighter side of moments in class.  If you feel it is appropriate, post under the stories page of the web site.  Maybe it can be used as prompt for others to share what they recall as their most comical moment " During Class"

The Scene:  Mr. Shute's Grade 10 math class

Math tests are handed back to students by Mr. Shute.
Gary Larose failed the test miserably with a score of 20 out of 100.
The following short conversation followed between Gary and Mr. Shute.

Mr. Shute:  Gary, you better come in after school for extra help

Gary:  Why sir, what are you having problems with?

Donna,

Mr. Shute's reaction may not be recorded..although he probably would have bit of a chuckle over it now.
Anyway, if you feel it fits it may spur on some more comical sits.

Take Care, Gerard
